If it feels harder to cover loads this fall, the data agrees. According to FreightWaves SONAR analysis published October 7, 2026, truckload tender rejections are hovering near 14% — roughly three times the range seen from 2023 to 2025 — while freight volumes are up only about 9% over the same three-year period.
Trucks are leaving faster than new ones arrive
The tight market is not being driven by a freight boom. It is being driven by capacity leaving. FreightWaves reports that for-hire tractor counts dropped by about 51,000 in August 2026 alone, and tractors in new for-hire fleets fell to 19,520 — far below the mid-2022 peak near 47,000.
New operating authority numbers have been climbing, but the analysis points out that an authority is permission to haul, not a truck on the road. Driver supply is also under pressure from Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse prohibitions and new rules on non-domiciled CDLs, while insurance costs keep rising. The outlook: a tight truckload market likely lasting into early 2027.
What this means for freight moving through Houston
- Expect more gaps between inbound and outbound trucks. When the next truck is hard to book, freight often has to wait somewhere safe.
- Refused or rescheduled loads get expensive. A driver who sits on a refused load is a truck that is not covering your next shipment.
- Consolidation saves trucks. Combining LTL shipments into full truckloads reduces the number of trucks you need to find.
How a crossdock helps in a tight market
A crossdock gives you flexibility when capacity is scarce. Drivers can drop freight quickly and get back on the road, while the load waits in short-term pallet storage or cold storage until the outbound truck is booked. LTL shipments can be consolidated into full loads, and shifted or rejected freight can be reworked instead of returned.
